Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of files that included no new data.
